Prompt 31: The Kick Counts Framework
When to use it
You're past 28 weeks and you keep hearing "do kick counts" but no one explains what that actually means, when to worry, and what to do.
The Prompt
I'm [N] weeks pregnant. I want to do kick counts but I don't know what the actual rules are.
My context:
- How active baby usually is: [E.G., "very active after meals" / "active in evenings" / "I haven't paid attention" / "I have an anterior placenta which makes it harder to feel"]
- Time of day I'm planning to count: [E.G., "morning" / "evening" / "after dinner"]
- I have [N] hours / [N] minutes to count
Please give me:
1. The "10 kicks in 2 hours" rule — what it actually means, where it came from, and the limits of the rule
2. The "count to 10" method vs. the "1-hour focused" method — which is more accurate
3. What counts as a kick (roll, hiccup, jab, stretch)
4. The best position to count in (and why lying on left side is recommended)
5. The "I don't feel 10 in 2 hours" decision tree (drink juice, lie down, call OB, go to L&D)
6. The "active baby" myth — a very active baby isn't necessarily a sign of a healthy baby, and quiet doesn't always mean trouble
7. How to distinguish normal quiet times from concerning decreased movement
8. When to start kick counts (28 weeks in low-risk, sooner if high-risk)
Important: I want to know when to actually worry vs. when to trust the process.Example output
*"The rule: 10 distinct movements in 2 hours is reassuring. ACOG + most providers endorse. Method: lie on left side after a meal or cold drink, focus on movement. Count any distinct movement (kick, roll, stretch). Don't count hiccups. Anterior placenta: movements are muted — you'll feel them later (often 28+ weeks). The myth: a 'lazy' day of fewer movements is sometimes normal (growth spurts, deep sleep cycles). Concerning pattern: SUDDEN decrease, or absence for 2+ hours after focusing. Decreased movement decision tree: (1) Eat + drink something sugary, (2) Lie on left side, (3) Focus for 1 hr. <6 movements → call OB. <10 in 2 hrs after that → go to L&D for monitoring. They won't think you're paranoid. Better safe than sorry."*
