Prompt #68Return to Work
Prompt 68: The Pumping-at-Work Logistics Playbook
When to use it
You're going back to work and need a real pumping plan. Not "just pump when you can."
The Prompt
I'm returning to work on [DATE] and I need a pumping plan. I'm currently [FEEDING — e.g., "exclusively breastfeeding" / "mostly breastfeeding, 1 bottle/day" / "combination feeding"].
My context:
- Work setting: [E.G., "private office" / "open cubicle" / "shared workspace" / "no dedicated space" / "I work from home"]
- Hours: [E.G., "9-5" / "8 hr shift with 1 hr break" / "12 hr shifts" / "non-traditional"]
- Manager: [E.G., "supportive" / "I haven't told them" / "ambivalent" / "won't be supportive"]
- Pumping equipment: [E.G., "Spectra S1, I have all the parts" / "I have a wearable (Elvie/Willow)" / "I need to buy" / "I'm borrowing"]
- Stash: [E.G., "I have a freezer stash" / "I'm building one" / "I don't have one yet"]
- My state: [E.G., "determined" / "anxious" / "I want to give up" / "I want to make this work"]
Please give me:
1. The actual pumping schedule at work (frequency, duration)
2. The 'how much should I pump' reality (and the supply math)
3. Your legal rights (PUMP Act, state laws, employer obligations)
4. The 'I don't have a private space' script
5. The 5 conversations to have with your manager
6. The pumping log template (so I can track and adjust)
7. The 'pumping in a wearable' logistics
8. The 'I can't keep up' decision (supplement, combo, switch to formula — all valid)
9. The 'pumping is killing my supply' troubleshooting
10. How to taper off pumping when I'm ready (the gradual schedule)
Important: I want a real plan, not just 'pump every 3 hours.'Example output
*"Pumping schedule at work: 2-3x/8 hr shift, 15-20 min, ~3 hrs apart. Output reality: 0.5-1.5 oz TOTAL per session is normal. Don't compare to baby's intake — they're more efficient. Supply math: aim to pump what baby drinks the next day (varies 25-35 oz/day by age). Legal rights: PUMP Act (2023, US) requires employers to provide reasonable break time + a place OTHER than a bathroom to pump for 1 year postpartum. If your employer doesn't comply: file with DOL. Scripts: 'I need 3x 20-min breaks to pump. Can we plan my schedule around this?' 'Can I use [room X] for 20 min, 3x a day?' Manager conversations: schedule, where, fridge for milk, flexibility. Taper: drop 1 session/week, replace with 1 feed at daycare. Watch for clogs. Combo feeding: nurse morning + night, pump 1-2x at work, formula for the rest — totally valid."*
